Writing, a lifelong commitment to making a difference through the power of words

Writing is a conduit for expression, a means to encapsulate our thoughts, emotions, and experiences.

It is the art of translating the intangible into words, to share, inspire, and resonate with others. We write to touch lives, to be a voice for the voiceless, and to inspire positive change. But writing for me is also a personal journey, a quest for self-discovery, growth, and impact.

My journey as a writer

As I sit before the keyboard, I reflect on the path that led me here. Writing was never a destination but a continuous journey, a testament to the enduring power of words. It all began in the early 1970s when my first piece found its place in the New Straits Times as a humble ‘Letter to the Editor’. The rush of joy and pride was unparalleled. It marked the first step of my writing odyssey.

Through the decades, writing became intertwined with my working and academic life, even during the pursuit of a PhD in the United States. Academic writing, though a formidable challenge, broadened my perspective on the craft. The years at the Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Prime Minister’s Department under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s guidance were transformative. The demands were high, but they sharpened my mind, enabling me to discern the essence from the superfluous.

The Asean Secretariat in Jakarta was another chapter, presenting a unique challenge in an international setting. My earlier experience at EPU gave me an edge, allowing me to craft policy papers that resonated with officials from diverse member countries.

The traits of a writer, I believe are:

  • Patience
Patience is the cornerstone of effective writing. It’s the willingness to revise, refine, and perfect, often enduring multiple drafts before achieving the desired impact. Each word is carefully chosen, each sentence meticulously crafted, until the narrative flows seamlessly.
  • Adaptability
A successful writer is not bound by a single style or subject matter. Instead, they possess the adaptability to tailor their writing to various occasions and audiences. Learning from others and being willing to adjust one’s style accordingly is a trait worth honing.
  • Consistency
There’s no shortcut to becoming a proficient writer. Consistency is key. Daily practice not only sharpens your skills but also nurtures the discipline needed to meet deadlines and produce quality work.
  • Diverse subjects
A well-rounded writer isn’t confined to a limited range of topics. Diving into various subjects, from weighty matters to the lighter side of life, broadens your perspective and allows you to connect with a broader audience.

The fulfilment of writing

Retirement brought with it the gift of time, allowing me to return to my passion for writing. This time, however, I chose to reflect on life’s experiences, friendships, challenges, and values. These are the stories that resonate with the everyday person, the issues that truly matter.

Through my writing, I strive to be a voice for the voiceless and provide hope to those seemingly without any. I address critical issues like racial unity, corruption, environmental concerns, and ageing gracefully, seeking resolutions that benefit our society.

A message to aspiring writers

To those who aspire to embark on this journey, my advice is simple: read widely and write consistently. Even if your work remains unpublished (be prepared to be rejected time and again when you submit an article), remember that belief in your craft will propel you forward as you stay determined and on course. As you write more, the gridlock of words that seem trapped in your mind will soon flow effortlessly.

Know your target audience and their interests, so your writing resonates and appeals. Write in a manner that’s easily understood, forging a connection with your readers. Consider taking up photography to enhance the impact of your articles.

The path to becoming a proficient writer is paved with passion, patience, and adaptability. It’s about honing your craft through consistent practice, exploring diverse subjects, and connecting with your audience.

As I reflect on my journey, I realise that writing is not just a skill; it’s a calling, a purpose, and a lifelong commitment to making a difference through the power of words.
