After a hiatus of four years, the Malaysian Open, one of the oldest National Opens in Asia, tees off tomorrow morning with a new title sponsor and a chance for three players to qualify for the British Open.
Three leading finishers at The Mines Resort & Golf Club, who are not already exempted before the closing date for entries of The Open, will qualify to play in this year’s championship at Royal Troon from July 14-21.
It is the first time the Malaysia Open will be one of the qualifying events for the world’s oldest golf Major.
As a run-up to the big day, there was a pro-am competition on Tuesday. Among the golfers was Tuanku Ampuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Aishah Rohani Tengku Besar Mahmud, The Mines Resort & Golf Club’s royal patron.
Tuanku Aishah Rohani wanted to play in Tuesday’s pro-am in support of the golf industry which was badly hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
South Korean professional, Bae Sang-moon, was in Tuanku Aishah Rohani’s team.
Besides Tuanku Aishah Rohani, amateur golfers from around the country, including managers from several golf clubs, played in the competition.
