The number of daily Covid-19 cases continues to rise in Malaysia, but this will not hinder the hosting of local and international sports events in the country.
This assurance was given by Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, even as the country today reported 19,090 new cases.
However, 99.41 per cent (18,977) of those cases were in Categories One and Two (asymptomatic, or only mild symptoms).
“The Youth and Sports Ministry will be monitoring the situation and adhere to the standard operating procedures (SOPs) in hosting international events,” Ahmad Faizal told Twentytwo13.
“Since the ministry is working closely with other related agencies in managing the pandemic, we will be prepared for whatever scenario in the near future.
“As we move into the endemic phase of the virus, the management of all local and international sporting events, using our proven SOPs, should be encouraged.”
The Malaysian sports industry was badly hit following the various lockdowns imposed in the country since 2020.
Ahmad Faizal added that trust in the Covid-19 vaccination drive spearheaded by the Health Ministry, was important.
He highlighted the recent MotoGP pre-season testing at the Sepang International Circuit, calling it “a great example of a successful event.”
“The implementation of SOPs by the National Security Council and the extent to which the government can instil and maintain public confidence in the effectiveness and safety of the Covid-19 vaccines, are equally vital.”
To date, at least 78.8 per cent of Malaysia’s 33 million population has received two shots of the vaccine. While the number of cases was expected to rise, experts said the latest Omicron variant would have a less severe impact on the majority of the vaccinated population.
Several international events have been lined up in Malaysia this year. They include the 18th Langkawi International Regatta, Mobile Legends Southeast Asia Cup, Asia Road Race 2022, and the Malaysian International Basketball tournament.
