The iconic Taiping Zoo and Night Safari in Perak has added several new species to attract and enhance visitors’ experience.
Taiping Municipal Council president Khairul Amir Mohamad Zubir, during the council’s full board meeting on Nov 27, revealed that the new species included:
- a pair of striped skunks.
- two pairs of Violet Turacos.
- two pairs of Mandarin ducks.
- two pairs of Carolina wood ducks.
- three pairs of ringed teals.
- a pair of golden pheasants.
- a pair of Lady Amherst’s pheasants, and
- five pairs of Gouldian finches.
“With the latest attractions, Taiping Zoo and Night Safari will continue to be the preferred destination for families ahead of the school holidays (next month),” Khairul Amir said.
Taiping Zoo, established in 1961, is the oldest zoo in Malaysia. It has some 1,500 animals from 140 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fishes. The Night Safari started operating in 2003, providing visitors with the chance to observe animals at night, when most of them are very active.
At the same full board meeting, Khairul Amir also highlighted that the local council had received the Sustainable City Award 2023 in conjunction with the state-level celebration of World Town Planning Day, held recently.
Dubbed the ‘Wettest Town in Malaysia’, Taiping is home to many firsts in the country and will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year. It is understood that the local council will soon announce a series of activities throughout the year, which will also include the unveiling of the iconic century-old Taiping market that is currently being refurbished.
