RTM to air AFC Asian Cup matches

Football fans will get to enjoy the upcoming AFC Asian Cup matches, either by watching them on Astro, or Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).

Communications Minister Ahmad Fahmi Mohamed Fadzil confirmed that RTM, the national broadcaster, will air the regional meet, which will kick off on Jan 12 in Qatar. This is in addition to Astro’s coverage of the event.

“Several quarters had asked if it (the Asian Cup) will be aired on RTM. The answer is yes. It will be aired starting Jan 12,” said Ahmad Fahmi during a press conference in Putrajaya this afternoon.

“I’ve obtained confirmation from the concerned parties, and InsyaAllah (God willing), it will be aired. The government will ensure that we will get to watch matches not only involving Harimau Malaya, but also the other teams competing in the Asian Cup.”

Twentytwo13 yesterday reported that RTM was negotiating the rights to air the tournament and the Paris Olympics. The amount that will be spent on securing the rights to air the two major events remains unknown.

The national football team, guided by South Korean Kim Pan-gon, will kickstart its Asian Cup campaign by playing Jordan on Jan 16, followed by Bahrain (Jan 20), and tournament favourites South Korea (Jan 25), in the group stages.

Malaysia, meanwhile, will bank on its shuttlers and cyclists, among the elite few, to stand on the podium at the Olympics, which will begin on July 26.
