Of unscrupulous, unethical, and immoral politicians

The common perception is that politicians run the country, but more often, they ruin it.

They are a breed unto themselves who are only concerned about their personal political agenda.

Then, there are despots, who not only deny their own people their rights, but who also slaughter them because of ethnic and religious differences.

Warmongering politicians perpetrate genocide and heinous crimes against humanity. They kill, maim, and inflict untold suffering on people and nations other than their own.

These politicians invent excuses and fabricate evidence to justify invading and killing people in other countries.

Such politicians are international gangsters and bullies for massacring millions who do not have the military means to retaliate or defend themselves. They, of course, avoid confronting countries that could match their own military might.

Malaysian politicians are a different breed, quite docile in fact, and eschew violence in pursuing their political agendas.

However, many have wasted time, energy, public funds, and the peoples’ trust in pursuing their political agenda, rather than focusing on the peoples’ economic, and social plight.

Some have plundered the nation’s coffers to enrich themselves, their families, and cronies.

As is being unravelled now, political leaders from previous governments are alleged to have amassed unimaginable wealth, which are inconsistent with their income, while the poor, huddled masses eke out a meagre living, some just hovering above the poverty line.

Yet, they talk about helping the people to eradicate poverty and improving their lot. The fact is, they could not care less.

Their public assertions of altruism, humility, and undying service for the people are merely rhetoric for political expediency.

Politicians are creatures without conscience, loyalty, accountability, and humility. They serve only themselves and change their stance and affiliations according to circumstances that promise positions and lucrative material gains.

They have no permanent friends, nor permanent enemies, and change bedfellows when it suits their tastes and pockets. They have no qualms in reneging on their promises and oaths.

Their focus is power, status, and wealth.

Opposition politicians will employ every means at their disposal to discredit and undermine the ruling government’s efforts, and to portray it as incompetent, and unable to deliver on its election pledges, instead of proffering constructive criticism.

Ruling politicians, on the other hand, will always be defensive, as many of them are ‘tainted’, their words and pledges hollow. They cannot hold the moral high ground because they have blemished personal and political records.

Both opposition and ruling politicians traversed the same grounds at one time or another, and are guilty of similar misdemeanours of malfeasance and misfeasance.

Social media is abuzz with cryptic revelations of previous prime ministers, ministers, and their corporate cohorts’ financial misconducts.

This could be real, or it could be hearsay. But as the saying goes, there is no smoke without fire.
