No shame if Premier League title goes to City, say Liverpool greats

Former Liverpool footballers

Steve McManaman says Liverpool won’t have anything to be ashamed of if Manchester City wins the English Premier League.

The Reds are top of the standings with 85 points after 34 matches with City on 83 having played a game less.

McManaman, along with fellow Liverpool legends Sami Hyypia and Jason McAteer, however, are confident the Reds can pip City to the title.

“I think Liverpool will win all their games starting with Cardiff on Sunday and hopefully we’ll get 97 points,” said the former England international, who played for Liverpool from 1990-1999.

“Most years that would be good enough to win the league but it all depends on what Man City do. If they win all their games – which they are capable of, then they would get 98 points.

“But it’ll be incredible for Liverpool to get to 97 points and even if they finish second, the fans can rejoice as we have been amazing this year and we look to have a very strong squad for the future.

“The gap between Liverpool and City and the rest is huge. Hopefully, we get back to where we belong and stay there for a long time.”

McManaman added City would like to gain revenge for its Champions League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur when the two meet in the Premier League tomorrow.

Tottenham eliminated City on away goals rules after a 4-3 defeat at City on Wednesday, a week after a 1-0 victory in London.

McAteer, meanwhile, said he believes Liverpool will beat Barcelona in the Champions League semifinals which will be played on May 1 and 7.

Liverpool crushed Porto 6-1 on aggregate while Barcelona thrashed Manchester United 4-0.

“It’s a glamorous tie. Barcelona are a fantastic side and to see (Lionel) Messi and his teammates at Anfield will be special,” said McAteer.

“But this is an ageing Barcelona team and Jurgen Klopp, since he has come to Liverpool, has been excellent in the Champions League.

“Home and away, he has very rarely got it wrong and while it will be a big ask at Nou Camp, the front three of (Mohammed) Salah, (Roberto) Firmino and (Sadio) Mane should create problems for Barcelona,” added McAteer.

“I see Liverpool winning it.”

Former Reds captain Hyypia added he too is betting on Liverpool getting the upper hand in this tie.

The three former Liverpool players are in Malaysia as part of LFC World tour which sees the creation of an LFC World Hub at One Utama Centre Court until this weekend.

Within the Hub, Reds in Kuala Lumpur will be able to have a taste of Anfield with recreations of iconic locations such as the Shankly Gates, This Is Anfield sign and LFC World’s very own version of that special Anfield dressing room where fans can sit under the shirts Salah, Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Firmino – to recreate their own iconic dressing room image.

There will be chances over the weekend to win tickets to come face to face with the fan favourites during meet and greet sessions.

Not only can dedicated Reds supporters take part in all these free LFC activities, but they can also share the Anfield atmosphere at a free-to-attend viewing party on Sunday at the LFC World Hub. Tickets are available at ProTicket Malaysia.

Standard Chartered is giving all fans who visit the hub a chance of winning a once in a lifetime trip to Anfield to experience a match in the 2019/20 season. More information is available at www.WinLFCWorld.com.
