Next Generation Oil Group’s (NGOG) sustainability journey receives a boost after receiving the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) last Thursday.
This officially recognises the Malaysian-based company as being the only algae certified cultivation company in the world, thus propelling the country as the sole global contributor of third-generation biomass.
The certification ensures that the company’s algae cultivation farm and crude algae oil extraction facility in Kuantan, Pahang, complied with high ecological and social sustainability requirements, greenhouse gas emissions savings, and traceability throughout the supply chain.
ISCC is a global certification system that covers the entire supply chain and all types of bio-based feedstocks and renewables.
“The ISCC certification establishes our business as a sustainable operation, and allows us to access global customers who are increasingly demanding good ESG (environmental, social and corporate) governance from their partners,” said NGOG executive chairman, Datuk Mohamed Moiz JM Ali Moiz.
He added that apart from the sustainable processes, the cultivation of algae is also “environmentally sound as it does not need arable land, and we use seawater instead of freshwater”.
The United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia and Brunei welcomed NGOG as its newest and first full member in the biomass renewable energy space.
Both parties will explore avenues to raise awareness of the opportunities of cultivating algae as a carbon sink, and the extraction of crude algae oil as a carbon-neutral feedstock for biofuel.
During a press conference last Thursday, NGOG called on local manufacturers to join its new Algae Farm Tank-Vendor Development Programme.
The programme, which will be managed with Boustead Holdings Bhd, aims to support the cultivation of 38,000 acres of microalgae, and simultaneously champion Malaysia’s drive towards becoming a Net Zero Carbon Emitter before 2050.
