Leona Chin will pull double duty at the Asia GT Festival at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) this weekend.
The 32-year-old race driver will compete in the Super Street and Saga Cup competitions, hoping a good performance will help her get funding to drive in the China GT series on a permanent basis.
“I have been trying very hard to secure funding but sadly, have not managed to get what I need,” said Chin, who was named SIC Motorsports Association of Malaysia’s Most Inspiring Female Motorsports Athlete a month ago.
“I hope for podium finishes as I would like to drive full time in the China GT series. I have to show my capabilities and that will motivate me even further this weekend.”
Chin admitted it will not be a walk in the park as there are many new faces in the fray.
One reason for the surge in popularity is the fact the Asia GT Festival is being held outside China for the first time.
It is a precursor to a five-year agreement between Country Heights and Goldenport Enterprises and it will be on SIC’s motorsports calendar for the duration of the agreement.
The Asia GT Festival will see over 30 GT cars from all around the world racing for the coveted prize money pool of RM5.45 million (RMB9 million).
“I had a look at the entry lists for my events and it is going to be tough. There are so many good racers,” said Chin, who is also known as the ‘Girl Drifter’.
“Having so many good drivers and teams is a good thing as it shows the event is popular.”
Separately, Chin is also searching for sponsors to compete in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Series.
“I have a friend who has a Lamborghini and I can use it for the series but once again, it is all about finances. Hopefully something happens soon.”
Meanwhile, a Celebrity Bazaar will be among the highlights visitors can look forward to at SIC.
The Celebrity Bazaar will feature a series of pop-up stores and marketplace by local celebrities such as Joe Flizzow, Elly Raja Lawak, Linora Low, KTown Clan, and 47 others. This event is jointly organised by Mbits Digital, a local integrated telco and broadcasting startup.
“The Asia GT Festival offers unique lifestyle experiences for visitors of all ages to enjoy such as the Celebrity Bazaar,” said Matahari Lee, Executive Director of Country Heights Holdings Berhad.
“The Celebrity Bazaar aims to provide a platform for local creators and artists to showcase their masterpieces for visitors to indulge.”
Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is expected to flag off the Prime Minister’s Saga Cup race on Sunday.
