Kaamatan was on May 30, and Gawai officially starts today, June 1, but the celebrations last the whole month.
To all those celebrating: “Kotobian Tadau Tagazo Do Kaamatan” and “Selamat Ari Gawai, Gayu Guru Gerai Nyamai, Lantang Senang Nguan Menoa. Oohaa!”
I would usually be in Bau, Kuching, in Malaysia’s largest state, Sarawak, by the end of May, to celebrate with my in-laws, but not this year. I will be in Subang Jaya, Selangor.
There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that my nephew recently got married, and the wedding reception was earlier today. I did not want to miss it for the world.
The second is that the National Press Club of Malaysia (NPC) will have its inaugural ‘Jom Jalan with NPC 2024’ tomorrow, June 2, at Padang Merbok.
On May 31, I collected the prizes for the lucky draws and I am looking forward to the walk.
This event is unique as it has a competitive 10km category for adults and school children, making it one of the few such races in Kuala Lumpur.
Hopefully, ‘Jom Jalan with NPC’ will become an annual affair, drawing large crowds.
Several sponsors have come on board for the inaugural ‘Jom Jalan with NPC’, and several others have indicated their interest next year. That’s a good sign.
If you are free tomorrow, ‘Jom’ meet at Padang Merbok to cheer us on.
