If the British were to be faulted for introducing the divide and rule concept, Malaysian politicians are guilty of continuing to use this concept – 64 years later.
This was the crux of Twentytwo13‘s managing editor Pearl Lee’s column in newly launched Malay news portal Getaran on Friday.
Her column comes following the launch of National Unity 2021-2030 Blueprint by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin earlier this week.
Pearl said racism and discrimination exist worldwide. But why is the quest for unity in Malaysia challenging?
“We are not only a nation that gained independence 64 years ago but a nation that prides itself with its people who are multi-racial.”
“Fact is, our politicians often use the race and religion card to fish for votes. Attend any political ceramah and you can see how they use race and religion to gain popularity.”
Pearl added seniors often say they want the old Malaysia back.
“They say Malaysians in the 60s, 70s and 80s were more open-minded, mature in thinking and were tolerant. But is this possible?”
