I ain’t going to the barber anytime soon

Dear Diary,

The government is allowing barbers and hair salons to open just as I was planning to have a ‘Grizzly Adams’ look. For those of you who are too young to know, that was a movie and later television series which RTM used to show over and over again.

I don’t know how safe I would feel visiting my usual Indian barbershop although I do miss the barbers using my head as a tabla when they give me an ayurvedic head massage.

After another sleepless night, the morning got off to a bad start when I learnt ‘King’ Kenny Dalglish has Covid-19. I wish him well.

Here’s how Day 25 of the Movement Control Order (MCO) unfolded.

1.29am: HANDY GUIDE – Don’t know how much food to buy? Check this out.

6.37am: MORE BAD NEWS – Kenny Dalglish may be a Sir but to Liverpool fans, he is the ‘King’. He has tested positive Covid-19 but remains asymptomatic. Get well soon.

7.45am: FINGERS CROSSED – Researchers at Te Herenga Waka-Victoria University of Wellington are developing a decoy molecule that fools coronavirus by attracting it before it can attach to lung cells.

8.51am: HORRIBLE NUMBERS – The US becomes the first country to record more than 2,000 deaths in one day, with 2,108 fatalities. The US has 500,000 confirmed cases.

9.27am: NO SHORTCUT – Selangor and Federal Territories Indian Hairstylists Association chairman Ganathiban Murugan had in a report said the association disagrees with the move to allow barbershops and salons to resume service as it might not be safe. Perhaps they can do this.

10.42am: OLDIE BUT A GOODIE – A news article from a year ago which names Malaysia as the ‘Best Healthcare in the World category of the 2019 International Living Annual Global Retirement Index’ is widely shared on social media. Judging by how our healthcare providers have been dealing with Covid-19, it is a well-earned accolade.

12.56pm: REMEMBER HIM – Babyface, whose real name is Kenneth Edmonds has Covid-19. What’s more shocking, he’s 62 years old!

1.29pm: ‘JESUS’ IS SAVED – British-American actor Adam Bond who is famous for playing Jesus in several television series, has been cleared of Covid-19 after three weeks in Kuala Lumpur Hospital. He will return home in 11 days.

2pm: STERN ACTION – Senior Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaacob says police will no longer compromise with those who disobey or violate MCO after revealing 7,759 persons have been arrested since March 18. This includes 280 arrests on Friday.

3.55pm: WHAT’S THE PLAN? – A special Cabinet meeting will decide next week if it is safe to allow tertiary students staying at or near their college and university campuses to return home following the extension of MCO.

4.51pm: FIGURES CLIMBING – Indonesia announces 330 new coronavirus infections taking its tally to 3,842. It confirmed 21 virus-related deaths, taking the total to 327.

5.08pm: THREE MORE DEATHS – There are 184 new cases which take the total to 4,530. Three new fatalities make it 73 deaths. A total of 165 patients were discharged, making it 1,995 cured cases.

6pm: THE HAIRCUT SONG – A tribute to my barber.
