Managements of apartments and condominiums are not authorised to impose fines on those who disobey standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Responding to an incident involving a condominium management in Ampang that fined the parent of a one-year-old for not wearing a face mask in the lift, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said it was “unreasonable”.
“Condominium and apartment managements have not been given the power to issue compounds against those who do not observe the SOPs. This comes under the Health Ministry and only the police can issue such compounds,” explained Ismail Sabri during his daily press briefing today.
“In fact, when there is an act of vandalism within its premises, the management needs to lodge a police report as only the police can take action.”
“What was done by the management in Ampang is wrong and they need to revoke the fine. And a one-year-old …. it’s unreasonable.”
A parent had taken to social media yesterday, posting a picture of a letter from the management of the condominium in Bandar Baru Ampang. The recipient of the letter was fined RM100.
A screenshot of a conversation, believed to be between the management and the resident, was posted on social media with the resident explain the child was only one year old.
The Health Ministry, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, advised the public not to put on face masks on those aged two and below.
