Companies told to explore ultra-speed Internet, amendment to Personal Data Protection Bill passed

The Malaysian government is urging individuals, businesses, and organisations to explore the vast possibilities of ultra-speed Internet.

Speaking at the showcase of Malaysia’s first 10Gbps broadband on July 17, Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo said he would like to see more digital case studies from all sectors and industries, including those using ultra-speed Internet.

“This will give the public, and potential investors, a glimpse into our capabilities,” said Gobind at the event, organised by ViewQwest.

“This ultra-speed connectivity demonstrates the advanced capabilities and benefits of 10Gbps Internet. It is also a testament to Malaysia’s fast and reliable Internet infrastructure and its game-changing impact on Malaysia’s digital future.”

He said the benefits of, and opportunities from such ultra-speed connectivity are aplenty, as a fast and reliable Internet connection is essential for economic development.

“Ultra-speed Internet will increase productivity, efficiency, and innovation across all industries, such as e-commerce, agriculture, education, healthcare, finance, and even government services. Services and production will be 10 times faster, if not more.

“More importantly, the Internet connects Malaysians. Such ultra-speed connectivity is crucial to empower Malaysians to be digitally-savvy, and use digital technology to its fullest potential.”

He added that the introduction of such a technology would result in the development of new talents, and enhance digital trust.

Meanwhile, the Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2024 was passed in the Dewan Rakyat on July 16 after the second and third readings. The 2024 Bill is likely to be presented at the Dewan Negara at its next session, scheduled from July 22- Aug 1.

The ministry also said that it would assist small, and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia to implement e-invoicing.

Gobind, who launched the National e-Invoicing Open Day and Accreditation Ceremony on July 16, said his ministry was aware of some of the concerns raised by SMEs.

“We will see how the government can help. We are open to feedback and views that will help improve the system and make things easier for all,” he added.

On July 17, Gobind joined Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, and met representatives from Ericsson.

Ericsson was represented by its group president and chief executive officer, Borje Ekholm, and Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh president and chief executive officer, David Hagerbro.

Yesterday, Gobind met representatives from META as they discussed some current issues and policy matters, with the ultimate goal of establishing a safer digital environment for all. He also met officials from Thai company, Vekin, as they spoke about climate resilience, decarbonisation, and carbon credits.
