Seet Wai Song (main image) is usually busy in the kitchen cooking delicious cuisine for international music stars, but tomorrow, he will embark on a different journey.
Better known as Chef on Wheels, Seet and five friends – T. Daniel Thiagarajan, Navin Raj William Lyon, A. Suresh, K. Loorans and R. Pathmaram – will drive 25,000 kilometres across 21 countries from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Stuttgart, Germany, in 60 days with the hope of raising RM250,000 for the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM).
And the sextet will do so in four vintage Mercedes-Benz models – two 123s and two 114s – that the owners have had for nearly 50 years.
No stranger to charity work, Seet said he came up with the idea as he wanted to do something different for the (NCSM).
“In a way, it is a ‘syiok sendiri’ project,” joked Seet.
“We were planning a road trip but did not expect it to be this epic!”
Most importantly, the drive is a self-funded project.
“Now that it is on, we are determined to raise as much money as possible. The journey is 25,000km long, and our mission is to raise RM10 per kilometre.”
To help raise funds, Seet and friends have started a Giving Hub page called Vroom With Pink for those who want to donate to NCSM.
“All funds will go to NCSM. I am setting up the social media pages so those interested can follow our journey,” said Seet, ahead of the flag-off ceremony in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
“Although there are four cars, there are six of us. Safety is important. We do not want to drive if anyone is tired.”
For the past month, Seet and his friends sent the cars to their mechanics and workshops for inspection and to get new paint jobs.
“The cars are 40-50 years old. We had to ensure everything was in tip-top condition before the journey.
“My friends and I are ready for the challenge. I hope we meet our target. Wish us luck.”
