The Burnley Cup could be either in Terengganu and Penang judging by data collected by senior journalist Devinder Singh.
Devinder, who is known to compile statistics on Malaysian football, including past results, pointed out that the final edition of the Under-19 tournament was held in Sultan Nasiruddin Shah Stadium in Kuala Terengganu.
After reading Twentytwo13‘s ‘Where is the Burnley Cup?‘ published earlier today, Devinder provided a full list of Burnley Cup final results and venues from 1962 to 1972 based on his research.
1962: Selangor 4 Perak 2 (Merdeka Stadium)
1963: Selangor 3 Singapore 1 (Merdeka Stadium)
1964: Selangor 3 Singapore 2 (Jalan Besar Stadium, Singapore)
1964/65: Penang 3 Perak 1 (Merdeka Stadium)
1965: Selangor 2 Perak 0 (Perak Stadium)
1966: Penang 2 Selangor 2 – joint winners (City Stadium)
1967: No tournament
1968: Perak 2 Selangor 1 (Merdeka Stadium)
1968/69: Perak 2 Selangor 0 (Darulaman Stadium)
1969: Sabah 1 Selangor 1 – joint winners (Kubu Stadium, Melaka)
1970: Selangor 1 Perak 0 (Station Padang, Seremban)
1971: Perak 1 Terengganu 0 (Jubilee Ground, Kuching)
1972: Terengganu 2 Penang 2 – joint winners (Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium)
It was earlier reported that the trophy could be in Sarawak. For the record, there is no official website that provides details of the youth tournament.
Datuk George Joseph remembers refereeing Burnley Cup matches when the tournament was held in 1968.
“It was a big thing back then. I was a referee in some of the Burnley Cup matches including the 1968 final,” said Joseph.
“It’s been a long time and I can’t even remember what the trophy looks like.”
Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh, who once served as FA of Malaysia (FAM) chairman of the referees’ committee and was the fourth official at the 2010 Fifa World Cup, said he has “only heard stories of the great Burnley Cup” but “never seen it (the trophy)”.
FAM is trying to locate the trophy, which is believed to have been brought to Malaysia by former Malaya coach Choo Seng Quee in 1961 following his brief stint in England.
